You get a taste of the pressures that caused the migration, and the type of characters that reacted to them. The story is set with plenty of action, a good plot, and something very important to me when reading a book of this type; a very good hero protagonist.The hero of this story is driven by divine revelations to be the tip of the spear for his people. His personal experiences affect how he acts, his trials seem to teach him lessons. A nice attribute is a character heading into the unknown. It easy to get behind a hero like this one, even if he is a warrior type from the pre-viking age with a mind set to match.
Don't expect to be dragged through the history books to get a glimpse of what this time and place were like. You will be presented a living story of brave and proud men carving out a place for themselves in a new land. You will be given a peek at an ancient way of life through the eyes of those that (should have) lived it. Enjoy this book for the adventure and the visceral impact of this hero's life.

Fascinating view of that period ! Enjoyed every minute! Truly brings and understanding of the birth of a nation. Thank you.
These books read like A Swiss Family Robinson of a brutal, murderous, ambitious tribe of Anglecyn. Whatever the main character needs to prosper, he finds right there, usually without much trouble. Sometimes he has to chop some people up or shed some blood himself to get it, but he usually comes out far ahead. Being that for most of us, things don't work out so well so much of the time, I like this type of book (I love Swiss Family Robinson, too). I also appreciate that the author has done some research into the subject matter. Not being an expert or even a novice on it myself, I don't know what is true and what isn't, but the few things that I thought sounded true and cool and interesting that I looked up, proved to be factual or at least close to factual. So it doesn't appear to be completely made up nonsense (which I also like anyway). I'll keep reading this series.

Different time and people than I usually read about, but fascinating none the less.
Andrew Cook brings the warrior Wulfhere alive, and its fascinating to watch him grow to the lord of this book. Can't wait until I start the next one!!
The story is engaging with good characters, good descriptions, and plenty of action. This author and his proof reader have misused LEAD and LED so many times throughout the first two books, I wonder if this is due to the schools in Britain. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the book.
